It was as amazing to watch in person as it is to watch on youtube. This is how NYU students do graduation. And it was a nice break from the otherwise dull ceremony (minus Michael Strahan, Michael J Fox, and the video the alumni did for us). The perfect way to end the college career.I went to Vegas for 3 days with my dad, and we stayed at the Imperial Palace. Besides roaming around the various casinos (and yes, we did go to the Bellagio Hotel Vegas, Mirage, and MGM Grand. What kind of Ocean’s Trilogy fan would I be if we didn’t?), we also got to see Beatles Love and Cher. Beatles Love at the Mirage was really cool. It’s a Cirque du Soleil show set to Beatles music, and although occasionally strange, it was really entertaining. Not enough Ringo though. But the question on my mind during the trip was: do the 5 separate Cirque du Soleil troupes have rumbles in Vegas? (there are 5 different CdS shows going on in the city.) That would be amazing. It’d be like West Side Story except with ropes and trampolines.

The Cher concert at Caesar’s Palace was a lot of fun too. Cher fans are terrifying though. Not only were quite a few of them drunk, they were also very loud and insane. We had 2 obviously drunk women in front of us in line who were trying to get backstage and were very annoying. And the woman in front of us in the Colloseum gave us a look for not standing up to watch towards the end. I stand for no one except for Tom Petty!!! Cher looked pretty good for being 62 years old (it was her birthday that day) although she doesn’t move around as much as before. And the show would have been a lot better if she didn’t make so many costume changes and sang a lot more songs. Silly Cher. Although I’m sure the drunk crazy Cher fans didn’t care. I wonder if the Cher fans and the Bette Midler fans get into fights (Bette is also performing at Caesar’s when Cher has time off). Or they might possibly be the same fans.

Random Observation #1 Vegas Style: Why do the older people who come to Vegas feel that they need to dress younger? Just because you’re in Vegas doesn’t give you the right to wear that bikini or speedo especially with those guts and thighs.

Random Observation #2 Vegas Style: The Palazzo gets extra points for having a No Smoking Rule in the casino. My lungs thank you.

Random Observation #3 Vegas Style: The Vegas Strip is about to get even more crowded with the new Apartment/Condo buildings they’re putting between New York, New York and Monte Carlo. I don’t know if I’d be willing to live on the Strip unless they were filming another Ocean’s movie and it gave me better access to my boys.

Random Observation #4 Vegas Style: No, I do not want to come into your casino and get some free offers. Or see a “free” show. I have plans, thanks.

Random Observation #5 Vegas Style: Virgin American didn’t impress me as much as I thought it would. No free snacks and a lot of the TV Channels weren’t working. My heart still belongs to Jet Blue.

…It is unbelievable how large this shopping center is. Adjacent to the Caesar’s Palace hotel, it’s easy to reach from anywhere on the Vegas Strip. What you’ll find here is a combination of designer brand stores and popular name-brand stores. For example, there are names like Versace as well as names like Diesel. This is one of the best places on the Strip to go for buying clothes although there are plenty of other things to be bought here as well.
Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile Shops. This is the casino shopping mall that is most like the traditional shopping mall. It will look a lot like what you’ll find at a place like Showcase Mall; it just happens to be inside of Planet Hollywood.
The Venetian’s Grand Canal Shoppes. In terms of the shopping experience, this might be the best casino-based mall on the Strip. That’s because the stores all line canals where gondola rides are given and entertainment can be enjoyed. The “streets” of this indoor mall are cobblestone and you get the sense that you’re outdoors in Italy even though you’re really shopping inside. There is also a great blend of traditional mall stores and designer name stores here so it’s a shopping spot that suits all different types of budgets.
Via Bellagio. For those upper-crust folks who don’t want to shop in the midst of more average consumers, a better bet for casino shopping is the Bellagio’s set of designer stores. This is the place where you can buy thousand-dollar handbags and the shoes that are showcased on television shows like Sex and the City. Someone in Vegas who is seeking to make an impression with Tiffany diamonds or Fendi accessories will find that the Bellagio is the one-stop spot for racking up the credit card debt.
Wynn Las-Vegas. Another fancy place where you can really go crazy with buying brand names that others are sure to recognize is the shopping area of the Wynn. If names like Chanel, Manolo Blahnik and Oscar de la Renta are names that you like to let roll of your tongue then this is the place for you.
Le Boulevard at Paris. Yet another place where you can spend a lot of money is the shopping available at Paris hotel and casino. This one is great because it provides some of the benefits of the Venetian with some of those at Via Bellagio. On the one hand, the shopping experience is exquisitely designed to make you feel as though you’re really in Paris. On the other hand, the stores tend to be higher-value, boutique-design stores…

Did everyone forget? What a fitting location to be spending this week. OhCaptain is in sunny Las Vegas and this also happens to be the 2 year anniversary of OhCaptain Poker and looking at the blog archive, I should 200 posts very soon! Live posting from Vegas can be fun.

What a weird day we’ve had so far. I slept like crap last night. Our bus was loading from Treasure Island Casino in Red Wing, MN at 4:30 AM. I was wide slept from 11-12, then the alarm clock went off. Why? We don’t know. I fell back asleep around 2 and slept til 3:30. Sweet! The alarm clock went off at 4. Ugg.

The flight left early and made good time. The only problem with the flight was we had fasten your seat belt turbulance from Minneapolis to Omaha or about half the flight. No sleepy.

We arrived here in Vegas at 9am PDT. We were told our rooms might not be available until maybe 6pm. Personally, I wasn’t really happy about this, but what are you going to do?

OhCountess and I decided we wanted to walk to the hotel we honeymooned at. Our honeymoon was our last trip time here. In 1996, we spent 5 wonderful days at the Hard Rock Hotel. The walk back there was exciting and strange. A few homeless people, lots of hooker ads and plenty of construction. Holy crap! That hotel has gotten so much bigger then when we were there. The casino itself hasn’t really changed much in 11 years, but the rest was nothing like our first stay.

We signed up, again (our first Rockstar cards had expired) for the Rockstar card. When you do that, you get a scratch off for an amount of “Casino Cash” to be used in a slot machine. Of course this lucksack turned his Rockstar card into $40. W00T! W00T!

While there, we got the call, our room was ready!!! Which was great. We were exhausted and hungry. Back to Harrah’s for the buffet and a nap.

The nap. Well, this is another spot where things went a little wrong. I slept until 11pm. Crap! No problem. Vegas doesn’t close. We headed out. I’m hoping to photograph a lot of it. You know, my other hobby. BTW - Anyone notice something weird about one of the photos above?

We made our way to the Bellagio Las Vegas. I’m a poker geek to the core, so I really wanted to see Phil Ivey’s office. No one was playing in Bobby’s Room, but Kenny Tran was using the room to make a phone call. No photography is allowed there…so don’t get caught. (Pictures coming…shhh)

The Bellagio is beautiful. I took a couple hundred pictures tonight. It might take a little while to go through them. Its 5 am. I’m gonna play a little online poker and fall asleep. Breakfast soon!

Maybe someone should call us and wake us up in a couple of hours.

IF YOU WANT TO HUMP ME
YA GOTTA KISS ME FIRST
AND RESPECT ME IN THE MORNING

This modern-day circus, reinventing itself through a performance style which precedes the Middle Ages, mixes circus arts and street entertainment with outrageous costumes, original lighting and unique music. The goal is to create an unearthly spirit-world which, by challenging the physical laws of our world, propels the audience into the limitless and liberating world of the imagination.
Cirque du Soleil was formed in Québec in the early 1980s by a group of enterprising street performers. At that time, the province of Québec did not have a circus tradition, so this group of stilt-walkers, jugglers, fire-eaters and buskers banded together to create a performance platform for themselves. They called themselves “Club des Talons Hauts” or “High-Heels Club,” since most of them were stilt-walkers. The group organized a festival “Fête Foraine de Baie St-Paul” (The Baie Saint-Paul Fair), in which the street performers could exchange ideas and techniques and this led to the birth of Cirque du Soleil.
The first show of Cirque du Soleil proper took place in the town of Gaspe in 1984. Other performances throughout Québec soon followed. The following year brought a highly successful tour of Ontario, and soon the rest of Canada and the United States were enjoying the highly original performances of dazzling feats of physical skill, magical illusion and burlesque. By the 1990s Cirque du Soleil was enjoying international success.
In 1999 Cirque du Soleil toured 7 distinct circus shows to centres in North America, Central and South America, the Asia Pacific region, and Africa. Although its headquarters, designed by Montréal architect Dan HANGANU, remain in Montréal, Cirque du Soleil also operates from Amsterdam, Singapore, and from both Orlando, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada in the US. In 1999 Cirque du Soleil produced its first film. Called Alegria and inspired by the circus show of the same name, the film breaks new artistic ground, as have the circus shows which preceded it.
Through the clever development of merchandising and marketing ventures, Cirque du Soleil has become one of the largest cultural businesses in North America.

Cirque du Soleil
The website for the phenomenal Cirque du Soleil. Features colourful video clips, music, and backstage anecdotes about the world famous circus troupe.

Cirque du Soleil (French for “Circus of the Sun”, in English pronounced /sɜrk duː soʊˈleɪ/) is an entertainment empire based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada located in Saint-Michel, and founded in Baie-Saint-Paul in 1984 by two former street performers, Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier.[1]
Initially named Les Échassiers they toured Quebec in 1980 as a performing troupe and encountered financial hardship that was relieved by a government grant in 1983 as part of 450th celebrations of Jacques Cartier’s discovery of Canada.[2] Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil was a success in 1984 and after securing a second year of funding Laliberté hired Guy Caron from the National Circus School to recreate it as a “proper circus”. No ring and no animals helped make Cirque du Soleil the modern circus (”Cirque Nouveau” / New Circus) that it is today.[3] Each show is a synthesis of circus styles from around the world and has its own central theme and storyline which brings the audience into the performance by having no curtains, continuous live music and performers change the props. After critical and financial successes (Los Angeles Arts Festival) and failures in the late 1980s, Nouvelle Expérience was created with the direction of Franco Dragone that not only made Cirque profitable by 1990 but allowed it to create new shows.[4]
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s Cirque expanded rapidly and went from one show with 73 employees in 1984 to currently 3,500 employees from over 40 countries doing fifteen shows touring every continent and have an estimated annual revenue exceeding US$600 million.[2][5] The multiple permanent Las Vegas shows alone play to more than 9,000 people a night—5% of the city’s visitors—adding to the 70+ million people who have experienced Cirque.[2] In 2000, Laliberté bought out Gauthier and with 95% ownership has continued to expand the brand.[6] Several more shows are in development around the world, along with a television deal, women’s clothing line and perhaps in other mediums such as spas, restaurants and nightclubs.[7] Cirque’s creations have been awarded numerous prizes and distinctions, including Bambi, Rose d’Or, three Gemini Awards and four Primetime Emmy Awards.[8][9] In 2004, Interbrand’s poll of brand names with the highest global impact ranked Cirque du Soleil as number 22.[10]

Recent layoffs at gaming companies like the MGM-Mirage have rattled nerves among Southern Nevadans. One place you won’t see layoffs is at the Wynn.

Steve Wynn doesn’t criticize the other companies, but he says his hotel is different. Service is key, and he knows that layoffs and even the fear of layoffs are not conducive to great employee performance.

“I think everybody who works here knows that we don’t do layoffs,” said Wynn.

“I was just speaking with Andrew who is the security man outside of the Ferrari shop and that was one of the first things he said. He said we don’t have layoffs. And this gives us a feeling of warmth and security and safety,” said Paula Francis.

“Whether we’re talking about you or I or them – if we’re not feeling safe, what good is anything else? I mean, take away a sense of security from employees who have children and responsibilities and a life to lead besides here and you destabilize their lives,” said Wynn.

This weekend, Steve Wynn will host 41 other hotel owners who have all won five star ratings from Mobil. The Wynn ranks fourth on a list that includes the very best of the best.

His employees have all been briefed on the very best way to cater to each individual hotel owner.

Resolved Question: Things for a teen to do in Las Vegas?
hey whats up everyone? Our family (me, mom, dad) are thinking about going to Las Vegas for vacation this summer, and using Vegas as a “home base” and go to Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, etc. I was wondering, after looking at maps of the hotels, are the restuarants and shopping malls in them off limits for a teen, because a casino is in the way? For instance, I was looking at a map of Bellagio and in order to go to one of their resturants, you’d have to go past a casino room. Also, is Fremont Street a cool place to hit up? Any other good malls? Thanks

Had a whirlwind trip to Las Vegas. Attended a conference, did a site visit, met with consultants, lunch, dinner, yadda, yadda.

Flight: First Class seating. Free drinks, I can’t complain.

Four Seasons: Decent. I prefer the Bellagio. The soap at the Four Seasons is BVLGARI but the surroundings of the Bellagio is much nicer.

Golden Nugget: My new place to gamble. $5 blackjack, dealers who convinced me to stay, play one more hand, and eventually more than doubled my investment. Pool scene had a hot guys hanging around. The one in the blue bathing suit. Hot Hot Hot!!!

Palm: Nice steak. The private booth was ok. All around, I’ve had better.

Verdict: Eh, let’s try again in 3 weeks.

As Karl and Praz prepare to jet off to Las Vegas for the WPT Five Diamond Championship at Bellagio, it got me in the mood for Vegas and I had a look around at what will be awaiting us in June-July time. There’s so much going on I decided to make a list of 5 poker festivals that should get any poker player hot under the collar, whatever their bankroll. You can click on the images to see the full schedules, starting stacks etc…

#5 - Bellagio Cup IV, Bellagio

I played a few of these last year and they got a decent amount of runners, around 65-100 for the afternoon comps and around the same for the nightly $1k comps. The starting stacks and structure were very good, but the organisation and rulings (See a few of Karl’s posts from last year) were a bit speculative. The buy In’s are quite high, and most people would rather opt for a WSOP comp at the same price and for a bit more value in the field (plus prestige)

#4 - Poker Classic, Binion’s Horseshoe
I didn’t get round to playing any of these last year, but from what I heard they were good. Their schedule replicates that of the WSOP schedule, but with a tenth of the buy in, so for example if the WSOP has a $5k event one day, Binion’s would hold a $500 and if a $1500 WSOP comp was happening a certain day, Binion’s would offer an $150. This is surely a must for poker players looking to head out to Vegas with a limited bankroll, giving them a chance to play where the WSOP began.

#3 - The Grand, Golden Nugget

This is a new festival and is apparently based on a new poker film being released, funnily enough called ‘The Grand’. A few people have told me The Golden Nugget is a place to stay away from as the card room is atrocious and the staff are not very friendly, but it looks like they have upped their game, and built a brand new card room that can hold 50+ tables and recruited new staff so I think this could be a winner. Again the buy In’s are very nicely priced and if it can attract a lot of player’s away from Binion’s festival they could be looking at fields of over 400, meaning huge returns for little investment and probably with load’s of value.

#2 - Deep Stack Extravaganza IIII, Venetian

I managed to play a few of these last year, and don’t have anything bad to say about them (except for having to queue up for 1 hour to get a players card, but that was just once) These were getting huge 500+ fields last year and were offering loads of play and tons of value. The card room was amazing and the staff/dealers very good. The $300 comps offer 6000 chips with an 45 min clock, and the $500 and $1000, 10000 with an hour clock. The buy In’s are a bit higher than Binion’s and The Golden Nugget, but definitely worth it. Have a good tournament and you could be walking away with $100,000+ for a $500 investment.

#1 - World Series Of Poker, Rio

This had to be top obviously, as Phil Hellmuth said in his book, there’s nothing more exciting then waking up and making your way to a WSOP comp at noon, and trying to make it too midnight for the end of days play as the field slowly disappears and your stack gradually grows. Of course the fields are big and the buy In’s are quite high ($1500 cheapest) but this is what playing poker is about, trying to get your hands on one of those bracelets and a huge payday as well as instant stardom ldo. The starting stacks and structures aren’t great by any standard but if you can work your way to a nice stack before the middle stages there is a lot of space for manoeuvring imo. schedule here

Hopefully this post will get a few more Brit’s out to Vegas in the summer, and hopefully they can clean up at a few of those venue’s. Please feel free to comment on your opinions and experiences of these card rooms and tournaments, and what you will be playing and why. I personally will probably do what I did last year, which is go broke, trying to get a bracelet, only time can tell…….
